The OBLIQUE CLOCK is part of a new series of works that keep time like Frenchmen keep mistresses; Artfully and with great precision.

By reinterpreting the exisiting elements of a clock face (hands and angles) this clock becomes a kinetic sculpture. Elegant geometry that evolves throughout the day, changing with each passing second to celebrate the fluid nature of time which has inspired it. Behind the clock face, the custom mechanical movements required to drive the piece were engineered from the ground up.

Created for Toronto’s 2010 Come Up To My Room design exhibition, the OBLIQUE CLOCK is part of a limited edition of 20 unique pieces.

Park Planters

Drawing inspiration from the bonsai, park planters were created to elevate the common household plant to the status of full grown tree. The potted plant becomes the backdrop for an urban park scene. Ranging from dog walkers to flashers and muggers, no two scenes are alike ensuring the autonomy of each piece.

Through passive amplification alone, These unique pieces instantly transform any personal music player + earbuds into a sculptural audio console.

Without the use of external power or batteries, the Phonofone inventively exploits the virtues of horn acoustics to boost the audio output of standard earphones to up to 55 decibles* (or roughly the maximum volume of laptop speakers)

Upon connecting active earphones to the Phonofone their trebly buzzing is instantly and profoundly transformed into a warm, rich and resonant sound.

The Phonofone is constructed entirely from ceramic. Not only environmentally low impact, ceramics are inherently rigid and resonant, lending themselves well to this application.

The RADIO CANADA concept is a homage to the cultural significance of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. This radio console design was inspired by the dedication of the many CBC listeners who keep their radio dials permanently set to our national broadcaster. After setting the radio to local CBC frequencies, listeners can toggle between CBC Radio One and CBC Radio Two without hearing the static in between.

The elegant design of RADIO CANADA celebrates the immediacy of the medium and reflects the quality of the broadcasts it receives. Additional features include MP3 player compatibility.

Dutch legends Droog Design held a competition a while back seeking a t-shirt design. Our submission aimed to celebrate the stains of the slopy eater. Pioneering as always, Science & Sons R+D department developed the revolutionary SLOBscreen bib... garnering us the distinguished Participant and the prestigious Not First Awards.

Nuit Blanche 07

Play By Hear


On Sept 28th 2007 Science and Sons had the honour of participating in Toronto’s 2nd Annual Nuit Blanche - contemporary all-night art event.

Science and Sons was commissioned to create an interactive public art instillation inspired by the phonofone. The principle idea behind this sculpture was to challenge the viewer to explore the relationship between their private listening equipment (Mp3 players, cell phones) and the contrasting social functions of music.

The result was as 10ft (3.3 M) long sculpture made primarily of 14 cleverly arranged nickel plated horns (tubas, baritones and euphoniums) mounted on an elliptical wooden base. Users (up to 14 at once) were invited to place the ear-buds or speakers of their digital devices into various horn mouth pieces, at which point their music was amplified and sprung forth from a corresponding horn.

Play By Hear was enthusiastically received as a captivating social musical instrument which flipped the antisocial stigma of private listening equipment on its ear.
